Contra | Washington University Men's Ultimate

About the team

What is Contra?

Contra is Washington University's club Ultimate Frisbee team. We play the highest level of collegiate Ultimate (there are no varsity teams), and we do it pretty well.

Who does Contra play?

Since Ultimate is not an NCAA sport, schools are not divided into divisions. Thus, our petty student body competes against, and often beats, teams like University of Arkansas, University of Oklahoma, and University of Kansas. Last year we finished 5th in a 50 team South Region.

How many tournaments does Contra attend?

In our never ending quest to qualify for the 20 team College National Championships, we attend roughly 3 away tournaments in the fall and 4-5 away tournaments in the spring, in addition to hosting a tournament in mid-March.

Who can play?

Anyone who is committed to Ultimate is welcome on Contra. We have about 40 members on both an A and B team and can accommodate all skill levels. That being said, we are especially excited about high school athletes with no prior ultimate experience. We have found that skills from many team sports (soccer, basketball, football, etc.) translate well onto the Ultimate field. While some contend that tennis players make the best Ultimate players, we are never blind to freakishly fast track athletes. Small obstacles, like not being able to throw a disc, are easily overcome.

When does Contra meet?

In past fall semesters we practiced Tuesdays and Thursdays with throwing practices on Saturdays. Our first tournament will likely be mid October with travel required. In the spring semester, we will have 3 practices a week with a throwing practice on the weekends. Official practice schedules are not set yet, so look for updates soon. In addition to practices, we throw a number of parties that we encourage everyone to attend to meet our team and mingle with WUWU (our women's counterpart).
