What is Contra?

Contra is Washington University's club Ultimate Frisbee team.  We play the highest level of collegiate Ultimate (there are no varsity teams), and we do it pretty well.  We have been a proud and prominent member of the Sports Club Federation at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri for 15 years. We have been known as "Handsome Howie and His St. Louis 7," "BGP (Big, Giant Possum)" and are now known in our latest incarnation as the "Contra." For those interested joining Contra's quest for Nationals, we are looking for interested, athletic members; experience is not necessary, although useful and highly preferred.

Who Can Play?

Anyone who is committed to Ultimate is welcome on Contra.  We have about 40 members on both an A and B team and can accommodate all skill levels.  That being said, we are especially excited about high school athletes with no prior ultimate experience.  We have found that skills from many team sports (soccer, basketball, football, etc.) translate well onto the Ultimate field.  While some contend that tennis players make the best Ultimate players, we are never blind to freakishly fast track athletes.  Small obstacles, like not being able to throw a disc, are easily overcome.

When does Contra Meet?

During the fall semester we practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 pm with throwing practices on Saturday.  In the spring semester, we will have 3 practices a week with a throwing practice on the weekends.  In addition to practices, we throw a number of parties that we encourage everyone to attend to meet our team and mingle with WUWU (our women's counterpart).

Who does Contra Compete Against?

Since Ultimate is not an NCAA sport, schools are not divided into divisions.  Thus, our petty student body competes against, and often beats, teams like University of Arkansas, University of Oklahoma, and Kansas University.  Last year we finished 5th in a 50 team South Region over teams like Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and University of North Texas.

How Many Tournaments Does Contra Attend ?

In our never ending quest to qualify for the 16 team College National Championships, we attend roughly 3 away tournaments in the fall and 4-5 away tournaments in the spring in addition to hosting a tournament in mid-March.
